Why Selecting a Newborn Photographer Based on Price is Not the Best Idea

Discover what’s really important when picking your Newborn Photographer

When it comes to researching newborn photographers, there’s so much to consider.  Here in beautiful San Diego, there are endless options for capturing this amazing time in a growing family’s life.  These photos are more than just memories – they are keepsakes that will last a lifetime. While it’s tempting to choose a photographer based solely on price, this decision might not provide you with the timeless memories you wish to create and cherish for years to come. Newborn photography is an art that requires expertise, patience, and an understanding of both safety and technique. Here’s why selecting a newborn photographer in San Diego or beyond based on price alone is not the best idea, and how choosing a photographer who values safety, artistry and quality will ultimately provide you with a much better experience and result.

Why are newborn photographers expensive?

Expertise and Safety in Newborn Photography:

Newborn photography is a specialized field that requires skill, experience, and attention to detail. Newborns are delicate, and working with them demands more than just a good camera and cute props.  Newborn photography requires knowledge of newborn safety, posing techniques, and how to capture those precious moments in a comfortable and safe environment.  Professional photographers invest in their craft through experience, ongoing safety education, high-quality newborn specific posing aids, and studio setups designed to create a safe and relaxed environment. Choosing a photographer based on cost alone risks compromising the safety and quality of the session.  A photographer who offers lower or ‘affordable newborn prices’ prices may lack the expertise or specialization needed to ensure your baby’s safety and comfort during the shoot.  Sure, you can look for a newborn photographer in your local mom’s group on Facebook, and you’ll get tons of responses, but I encourage you to opt for a photographer who is exclusive or specializes in the type of newborn photography with experience and a consistent and elaborate portfolio that vibes with your vision instead of one who is more of a ‘jack of all trades’.  A photographer who primarily photographs weddings and headshots will likely not have the detailed expertise and knowledge on how to safely pose and handle a newborn.  Think about searching for a French restaurant for the ultimate Escargot and Coq-au-Vin experience… would you pick the local small business owned by a French family who not only have experience in growing up in France, having trained with Michelin rated chefs, or would you head down to your local, more ‘affordable’ chain buffet restaurant offering this dish in addition to a ton of random other dishes?  Chances are, you’ll find the exceptional quality meal at the more expensive, specialized French restaurant.

Tips for verifying expertise and safety from your newborn photographer:
  • Ask your newborn photographer to see their business license, proof of insurance, infant and adult CPR certifications, infant safety training, years of specialization in newborn photography.  Don’t be afraid to ask to visit the newborn photography studio ahead of time to ensure proper safety for your little one including temperature in the studio, newborn specific props and posing aids made to ensure safe handling and posing of your little one. Review their website portfolio and scroll through their social media.  Look for the amount of experience and consistency they have with the particular style of newborn photography they offer.

Artistry and Creativity in Newborn Photography:

Photography is an art, and newborn photographers who specialize in newborn artistry will naturally cost more, as they have likely spent a great amount of time getting to where they are now, having achieved a level of artistic quality that sets them apart from others artistically.  As newborn photography is a specialty form of photography, there’s a lot that goes into planning a newborn session with an artist with a particular creative vision.  A newborn photographer who values their craft and creates high-quality, timeless images will likely charge more for their work. The effort put into newborn photography goes beyond the session itself; it involves visualizing and planning each shot, customizing setups ahead of time, editing each individual image with care, and offering high-end products like custom prints and albums. Investing in a photographer who prioritizes quality ensures that you will receive images you can cherish for years to come. There’s a lot that goes into turning a photo of a newborn into a work of art.  Little details such as relaxed tiny fingers, creative lighting and camera angles and patience are things that I personally find really make my art stand apart.  Every now and then, I will get a message with a photo attachment from a fellow photographer asking ‘is this your photo’?  Typically, the answer is yes, and I appreciate that my work stands out so much as to make it unique and recognizable.

Tips for picking a newborn photographer based on unique artistry and creativity:
  • Take a look at that photographer’s portfolio!  A photographer’s website is a great start.  Look at the images presented.  Do they speak to you?  Do you appreciate the photographer’s approach to capturing these tiny humans on camera?  Do the lighting angles and placement of props and accessories appeal to your vision?  Look at the details.  Does baby look comfortable, are baby’s fingers relaxed, does the image give you the impression that baby blissfully sleeping or awake and connecting to to through their eyes and expression?  Does this photographer’s work stand out from the rest?

Why selecting a newborn photographer based on pricing is not the best idea. Aim for an experienced, professional newborn photographer in San Diego!

Personal Attention to the Process:

A professional newborn photographer takes the time to understand your vision and guide you through the process. They offer advice on preparing for the session and create a comfortable, relaxing environment for both you and your baby. With a photographer focused on customer care, the experience will be enjoyable and stress-free. I personally ask my newborn photography clients ahead of time what I can do to make the session special.  Weather it be using particular colors, specific props from my large collection, incorporating heirlooms brought from home or creating specific themed art, I want to ensure that my clients feel that their session is catered to them specifically.  Often times, my clients leave it all up to me, and I love creating new setups that client will be able to appreciate when walking through my newborn photography studio doors.  With enough notice, I will order custom props and accessories to fit a client’s vision so that  everything is perfectly set up upon their arrival to the studio.  When solely selecting a newborn photographer based on price, remember that prices are not just created out of thin air.  The more props, backgrounds newborn posing aids and variety in colors and accessories, the more that photographer has to offer in terms of curated sessions.  Lower pricing could signal a more limited stock in all of these, leading you to potentially have to fish around to find particular newborn-safe posing aids, props, fabrics and accessories to bring in yourself.  A photographer who prides themselves as being an ‘affordable’ newborn photographer might have time limits on sessions as well and might not be as willing to include extra time if necessary.  Newborn photography sessions should never feel rushed, and extra time is often needed to ensure that baby is comfortable through a variety of poses.

Tips for ensuring personal attention during your newborn session:
  • Ask your newborn photographer if they provide any particular props, fabric colors or themed accessories that you would like to incorporate into your newborn photography shoot.  Are you looking to have an image created of your newborn to commemorate a particular holiday, profession, hobby or interest?  Share that vision with the photographer and ask if they have what it takes to make that vision come to life.  If time permits, ask if your photographer is willing to acquire and add that prop to their inventory for use during your session.  Ask for specific preparation instructions prior to your session to ensure a smooth and relaxing experience.  Ask about any possible time limitations on the session to ensure you won’t feel rushed during your session.

Quality Products vs. Digital Files Only:

Choosing a photographer based on price often limits your options for the final product. Many low-cost newborn photographers offer only digital files, leaving you to figure out how to print and display your images on your own. Not only that, but often times, the photographer will pick the photos for you, without giving you the option to pick your favorite images from the session.  Don’t get me wrong, digital images are a popular option that I also offer in addition to many other beautiful products, but if you’re wanting the option to have a custom, professional keepsake created for you without having to lift a finger, it’s always wonderful to have that option.  High-quality photographers, especially those who specialize in newborn photography, offer professionally designed albums, prints, and custom artwork that preserve your memories beautifully. These tangible products are crafted to last for generations, ensuring your family’s memories are more than just digital files saved in the cloud. A quality photographer will take the time to review the images with you, offer support, suggestions and ideas to select the images you love most.  These more experienced and specialized photographers will have a creative and professional eye for things you might not have considered when being presented with and selecting your images. These are typically called ‘image reveal’ or ‘ordering’ appointments.  They can be done on the spot or at a separate time, either in person or via Zoom at your convenience.

Tips for finding a newborn photographer who offers more than just digital images:
  • Ask your newborn photographer what they offer in terms of professional and timeless keepsake options, created just for them. Look through the products and see what you feel would fit your family and home best.  Is it an album?  Large wood prints in the nursery?  A stunning canvas above the crib? Are the labs that these products are ordered from professional level or consumer grade? What’s the process for reviewing and selecting the images captured during the session?  Will it be a hands-on experience where your voice will be heard and your photographer will offer expertise in suggestions in selections.

Is the cost of newborn photography even ‘that’ expensive?

If you think about it, a newborn photography shoot is a once in a lifetime opportunity to timelessly capture a special time in your life that you will never get back.  With each passing day, your newborn baby will begin to outgrow the newborn stage and you’ll only have these memories to look back on.  Literally.  These images will be cherished for not only years to come, but generations to come!  This is why many experienced and specialized newborn photographers use the term ‘investment’ rather than price, because this is not like spending money on a new iPhone that will last you only 2-3 years.  This is an investment that is made to last a lifetime!  I totally get it, the economy goes through its cycles and with the cost of living in San Diego, it’s second nature to consider pricing when shopping around for anything.  I get it!  But just consider the difference in price between a low budget photographer and a quality newborn photographer as an investment into your newborn’s safety and timeless memories.  Ask any quality photographer running a legitimate and successful small business and they’ll tell you that it costs A LOT to run a business.  You’ll find that those ‘affordable prices’ newborn photographers are not properly licensed, do not carry business insurance and do not have the safety certifications that they should in order to be in business.  That’s also a big reason why their prices are so low – it’s all under the table with no accountability if anything goes wrong. Maybe that’s a risk you could be willing to take for a different type of session, but for a newborn session, there is so much more to risk, as it’s such a hands-on specialization.  I highly recommend investing in a legally run business when it comes to such a delicate specialization as newborn photography.

Tips for investing in newborn photography:

  • If your budget doesn’t allow for a proper, experienced newborn photography session at the moment but you really love the style and professionalism in a particular, more expensive photographer, ask about payment plans!  These are a wonderful option that many quality newborn photographers offer, with no interest added, and a customized payment schedule to fit your needs.  This is the best way to capture the newborn stage before it’s too late while working with a payment plan that works for you.

Selecting a newborn photographer should be about more than just the price tag.  It’s about finding someone who has the expertise, creativity, and passion to capture the unique beauty of your baby in a way that reflects your family’s style. Like most other businesses, the expression ‘you get what you pay for’ applies here as well. By investing in a professional photographer who understands the art of newborn photography, prioritizes safety, has a consistent and extensive portfolio and provides lasting, high-quality products, you’re ensuring that the memories you capture will be worth every penny. These are the photos that you and your family will treasure forever, so focus on quality and experience over price when choosing your photographer.
