It was so fun to celebrate handsome Henry’s first birthday with one of my favorite families for his portrait and cake smash session a few weeks ago! I have know this awesome family since Henry’s big brother, Will, was born – which feels like it should have been yesterday, but really, was back in 2011! I know I say it all the time, but it really is so much fun to watch ‘my’ babies grow up!
We headed to one of my favorite local spots for some cute shots of Henry and that adorable outfit his mama picked out – that bow tie!!!! Love it! We ended our session with a little cupcake smash, which Henry totally enjoyed… his expressions are so adorable! His sweet mama brought extra yummy cupcakes for my two girls to bring home… thank you, Amy – they loved them!!!
Here are a few shots from our first birthday portrait session and smash for sweet Henry…

Sophie, you are gifted! Thank you for capturing this beautiful family on your camera
How do you capture such a sharp images?! Amazing job, I try even with my tripod and never achieve this sharpness….
Hi Fabiola, Thank you for your kind words 🙂 The lens I use for portraits has a lot to do with the sharpness of the image. I typically shoot ‘wide open’, often at a 1.8. Most of these were taken with a 70-200 or 85mm lens 🙂
Sophie-
You truly are an inspiration. It is because of you I even still keep my DSLR.. Your work is really top notch. I shoot with the 70-200 2.8L IS as well and I also cannot seem to get my images nearly as sharp as you. I’m not sure if its camera shake or not a fast enough shutter speed. For a typical family of 4 I have them posed identical to how the family in pic #4 are posed. (Kids just in front of the parents). My settings are typically 1/200, f/2.8, ISO 400 during golden hour. I just can’t seem to get them tack sharp! I also shoot at 200mm majority of the time. I also use autofocus, but I noticed when I manual focus they come out a little sharper. Any ideas as to what I may be doing wrong? My photos seem to come out more distorted if anything. It’s weird. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your kind words! To answer your question, it may be a variety of factors. For multiple subjects on different planes, I would shoot around 4 to 5. 2.8 might be too open for such difference is plane. Also, I typically have my SS at 250 at the minimum. Happy new year 🙂
