As a San Diego family photographer with nearly 20 years of experience, one of my favorite things about photography is watching families grow. From photographing an expectant couple during their maternity session to welcoming their newborn and capturing their children as they grow, I’ve had the incredible privilege of documenting so many special moments for families throughout San Diego County.
My family photography sessions are relaxed, fun, and centered around the people who mean the most to you. What to Expect From Your San Diego Family Photography Session
Family sessions with me are meant to feel relaxed rather than overly posed. I’ll give you plenty of direction so you never have to wonder what to do with your hands or where to look, but I also want your children to have room to be themselves. Some of my favorite photographs happen in between the posed moments—when everyone is laughing, cuddling, walking together, or simply interacting as a family.
Before your session, I’ll help you choose a San Diego location that works well for your family and the style of photographs you love. We’ll also talk about what to wear, the ages of your children, and anything else that will help me plan your session.
During your family photography session, we’ll create a combination of full-family portraits as well as photographs of parents with their children, siblings together, and the smaller connections that make your family unique.

What Should We Wear for Family Photos?
One of the most common questions I hear before a family photography session is, “What should we wear?” The goal isn’t for everyone to match perfectly, but for your clothing to coordinate so your family looks connected without feeling overly styled.
I usually recommend starting with a few complementary colors and building everyone’s outfits around them. Soft neutrals, natural tones, and subtle textures photograph beautifully, but your wardrobe should also reflect your family’s personality and the location we choose. I generally suggest avoiding large logos, very busy patterns, or anything that might distract from the people in the photographs.
Once your session is booked, I’m happy to help with wardrobe ideas and make suggestions based on your location and the overall look you want for your portraits. Most importantly, choose clothing that feels comfortable and allows everyone—especially children—to move, play, and be themselves.
Family Photography With Young Children
If you’re worried that your children won’t sit still, smile on command, or cooperate perfectly for family photos, please don’t stress. After nearly 20 years of photographing babies and children, I can promise you that a successful family session doesn’t require perfectly behaved kids.
I’ll work with your children’s personalities and energy rather than expecting them to stay still for the entire session. We might walk, play, cuddle, tell silly jokes, or take a quick break when someone needs one. I’ll still make sure we create those beautiful family portraits everyone wants, but some of the most meaningful photographs often happen when children are simply being themselves.
Your job is to enjoy your family and let me worry about the photographs. The more relaxed everyone feels, the more genuine your family portraits will be.
When should I book my San Diego family photography session?
I recommend reaching out as soon as you know you’d like to schedule family photos, especially if you’re hoping for a particular time of year or date. Fall is especially popular for family sessions, so those dates tend to fill more quickly.
Where do family photography sessions take place?
Family sessions can take place at beautiful locations throughout San Diego County. Depending on the look you love, we can choose from beaches, natural outdoor settings, or more urban locations. I’ll help you choose a location that works well for your family and the style of portraits you want.
What if my children don’t cooperate for family photos?
Please don’t worry! After nearly 20 years of photographing babies and children, I’m very comfortable working with little ones who would rather play than pose. We’ll keep things relaxed, take breaks when needed, and work with your children rather than expecting perfect behavior.
Can we include our family dog in our photos?
Absolutely! If your location allows dogs, I’m happy to include your four-legged family members. Let me know when we’re planning your session so we can choose an appropriate location and make a plan for including your dog in the photographs.
What should we wear for our family photography session?
