Why the First 14 Days Are the Best Time for Newborn Photos
(And What Happens If Your Baby Is Older?)

If you’re expecting a baby, you’ve probably heard that newborn photos should be taken within the first two to three weeks after birth. But why is this time frame so important? What is the best age for newborn photos? As an experienced San Diego newborn photographer, this is one of the questions I hear most often from expecting parents.
The good news is that beautiful newborn portraits can be created at many ages. However, understanding why photographers recommend the first 14 days can help you plan ahead and get the timeless images you’ve been dreaming of.
Why the First Two Weeks Matter
During the first 5 to 14 days of life, babies are typically at their sleepiest. They naturally curl into the same positions they were in before birth, making it easier to create those classic, peaceful newborn portraits.
At this age, babies are:
- More likely to sleep soundly throughout the session
- Comfortable in curled-up poses
- Less sensitive to gentle repositioning
- Easier to soothe between poses
These early days allow for the soft, timeless images that many parents fall in love with.
What Happens After Two Weeks?
Although the best age for newborn photos is those first couple of weeks, life doesn’t always go according to plan. Maybe your baby arrived early, spent time in the NICU, or those first weeks simply flew by. Don’t worry – you haven’t missed your opportunity for beautiful newborn photographs.
Babies who are 3 to 8 weeks old are often more alert and expressive. While they may not settle into every curled pose, they reward us with gorgeous eye contact, sweet stretches, tiny smiles, and so much personality.
Every stage tells part of your baby’s story.

Why Booking During Pregnancy Is So Important
One of the biggest mistakes parents make is waiting until after their baby arrives to search for a newborn photographer.
Professional newborn photographers often book months in advance. Reserving your session during your second trimester or early in your third trimester, helps ensure availability around your due date.
Since babies rarely arrive exactly on schedule, your session date is usually adjusted after birth to photograph your little one at the ideal age.
Safety Always Comes First
Newborn photography is much more than taking pictures of a sleeping baby.
Professional newborn photographers spend years learning safe posing techniques, baby physiology, soothing methods, and how to recognize when a pose isn’t appropriate for a particular baby.
Every baby is different, and no pose is ever worth compromising comfort or safety. A relaxed, happy baby always creates the most beautiful photographs.
Creating a Calm Experience for New Parents
Those first few weeks with a newborn can feel overwhelming. My goal is to make your session as relaxing as possible.
Before our newborn session, you’ll receive helpful preparation information so you know exactly what to expect. During your session, everything moves at your baby’s pace. We stop for feeding, cuddling, diaper changes, and comforting whenever needed.
Parents often tell me that the experience felt surprisingly peaceful, and many even enjoyed sitting back and watching while I gently photographed their newest family member. I’ve even had exhausted parents take little naps during the session while I work with baby!
These Photos Become Family Heirlooms
Newborns change almost daily. Tiny eyelashes, flaky little toes, delicate fingers, wisps of hair, and sleepy expressions quickly become memories.
Professional newborn photography preserves these fleeting details before they’re gone forever.
Years from now, these portraits won’t simply remind you what your baby looked like – they’ll remind you exactly how this incredible season of life felt.
